A reliable wholesale supplier is one whose products, terms and fulfillment fit your business and whose performance you can verify. A directory listing, long company history or low unit price is a starting point for research, not proof that a specific order will meet your needs.
Build a short list
Use trade shows, relevant supplier directories, industry referrals and direct supplier websites to identify options. Match the supplier’s current assortment, case quantities, location and delivery options to your sales channel. Avoid treating a listing badge or an unsupported review as a substitute for checking the business and offer.
Compare offers on the same basis
- Identity: confirm the business name, contact details and who is supplying the goods.
- Product: match item identifiers, condition, packaging, case quantity and any assortment details.
- Cost: compare product price plus delivery, receiving and preparation costs, not unit price alone.
- Terms: obtain the applicable payment, returns, shortage and damage-reporting terms in writing.
- Timing: confirm availability and the order’s shipment timing rather than relying on a general website statement.
- Documentation: ask what item documentation is available and check what your intended sales channel requires.
Use a small, verifiable first step
Ask whether a sample or inspection is available and what it costs. Some sellers do not offer individual samples; do not assume they do. Where appropriate, a manageable first case or lot can help you evaluate the actual process without committing more than you can afford to hold.
Keep a supplier scorecard
For each completed order, record the quantity received, condition differences, delivered cost, agreed versus actual timing and how questions were handled. Separate the supplier’s performance from your own sell-through results. Use that record when deciding whether to reorder.
A good relationship may make communication easier, but it does not automatically provide discounts, priority stock, credit terms or repeat availability. Ask for the current offer each time.
